5 books to grow your communication skills
If you’ve been around for a while you know how much I love books. I’m a firm believer that in order to get to new heights of success we need to remain students for life.
No better way to do that than to read books by mentors who’ve gone before us.
If you want to be sure that you continue to grow as a communicator, business leader, and speaker, then you’ve got to take time to invest in yourself and in growing your speaking skills.
Right about now you might be thinking…”Csilla, I don’t have time to brush my hair every day, let alone read a book.”
Oh, friend, I hear you! For us moms and business owners, ‘free time' is a luxury or pretty much nonexistent, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make time for growth and improving upon our skills!
Can I share a little secret with you? Listening to books can be just as effective as reading them!
If you are in a season where you can’t possibly pick up a book and actually read those pages, why not try listening to audiobooks?
I usually turn on an audiobook when doing laundry or unloading the dishwasher. Many times I listen when I’m exercising or waiting in the pickup line to get my kiddos from school.
I promise you can find a way to make learning a priority in your life, and it’s so powerful when you do!
5 books that helped me on my business journey and guided me into becoming a better communicator
#1 Everyone Communicates Few Connect
One of my favorites by Dr. John C. Maxwell. In this book, he argues that while it may seem like some people are just born with a commanding presence that draws people in, the fact is anyone can learn to communicate in ways that consistently build powerful connections.
He teaches Five Principles and Five Practices to develop this crucial skill of connecting, keeping your communication simple, capturing people's interest, inspiring people, and staying authentic in all your relationships.
#2 Building a Story Brand
A book I read at least 3 times ... and that should tell you something. While this book is mostly about clarifying your brand message it also offers great insights and lessons into how to communicate with more clarity and simplicity.
In this book author, Don Miller argues that every day most business leaders make a mistake that costs them thousands to millions of dollars: they don’t explain clearly what it is their company does.
People buy things because they read or hear words that make them want to buy things, and the StoryBrand Framework makes talking about your brand simple and effective.
#3 Unleash The Power of Storytelling
Humans are emotional beings, and narratives appeal to that, enabling them to receive and digest information more easily. Effective storytelling, however, often can take practice.
In Unleash the Power of Storytelling, author Rob Biesenbach offers a practical roadmap to crafting and delivering more powerful, persuasive stories that you can use to get more of what you want out of your career and your life. It helps you tell better stories and become a better communicator at the same time.
#4 Five Stars: The Communication Secrets to Get from Good to Great
Carmine Gallo, the author of Talk Like TED (another great communication read), turns to Aristotle’s three-part formula for persuasion, to which he says all great communicators from the founding fathers to today’s most successful business leaders adhere: ethos (credibility), logos (logic), and pathos (emotion). He also brings in neuroscientists, economists, historians, billionaires, and business leaders of companies like Google, Nike, and Airbnb to illustrate just how it works.
#5 How to win friends & influence people
If there ever was a book I’d recommend for everyone and I truly mean everyone to read, besides the Bible, it would be this book right here. The principles taught in this book will not only make you a better communicator but in general a better relationship builder. One of the principles that stood out most to me, as a speaking consultant is the following:
- Conversations are always happening in life, and how we handle them goes a long way to determining whether or not we succeed in our various endeavors.
- Every time you’re sharing or discussing ideas with a person or group of people, make sure to begin with praise and honest appreciation. If someone made a mistake, call attention to it, but only indirectly. But even before you talk about someone else’s mistakes, talk about your own. Give people a good reputation so they can live up to it.
- If you want someone else to do something you suggested, make them feel happy about it. Praise every improvement, even the slightest improvement, and use encouragement on a consistent basis.
Bottom line is, always build up with your words. Whether you are speaking to an individual or on a stage to thousands of people, our end goal is to connect with our audience and effectively communicate our brand message to them.
