Remember the time when you had to pay thousands of dollars to get your ads on TV, the radio, or billboards? Better yet, remember the days when the only people who had their voices on the radio or who had their faces on TV were either the famous or news anchors?

We now know that social media revolutionized the modern world and how people are marketed to. Why not take advantage of the opportunity? Why not use this amazing tool to spread a message of hope and empowerment?

 

If you’re building a business online, video is the most effective tool you have for connecting with your audience, gaining their trust, and creating compelling content that turns into sales!

In the rest of this article, I want to walk you through the framework of how to be more engaging and compelling when you do videos. This way you'll never have to step in front of your phone again not knowing what to say or how to say it.

  • You’ve been doing some videos but they are not really connecting with your followers
  • You want to become a more engaging and compelling presenter on short form video (think Instagram reels, IG videos, Facebook lives, etc.)

 

 

THE 7-STEP FRAMEWORK IN CREATING A COMPELLING VIDEO PRESENTATION

 

KNOW YOUR OBJECTIVE


Before you push the record or go live button there are two questions you have to answer for yourself.

 

  1. What is your goal for this video? What outcome are you hoping to gain? Is it to get more followers on social media? Is it to promote a new product? Is it to increase engagement with your audience? Is it to build trust? Knowing what your goal is will be your guiding light in the rest of this process. 
  2. What is the objective of your presentation? Meaning, what is that one takeaway you want your viewers to walk away with? You only want to have one. More than one and you lose people. Not only that, it will be confusing to you as the presenter as well. Stay focused on one outcome. What is that for your audience?

 

CATCHY INTRO


Did you know that the first 3 seconds are extremely important for your video content? According to statistics, 65% of people who watch the first 3 seconds will watch the first 10… and 45% of people who watch the first 3 will watch the first 30.

 

As you can see, grabbing your viewer’s attention in the first few seconds of your video is crucial in ensuring that they will stick around to watch the rest. 

 

Here are a few practical tips on how to start the first few seconds of your video captivating and catchy to your viewers or Instagram scrollers: 

  • Start with a story (Don’t tell people you’ll tell them a story. Just start.)

  • Share a shocking piece of information (related to your industry)

  • Start with a question (example: Are you tired of being your industry’s best-kept secret? Stick around and I’ll show you how to fix that.)

  • Tell people what they will learn (example: Hi there, in today’s video I want t show you how to get specific results)

  • Start with the problem (example: I know how frustrating it is to feel invisible on social media. You feel like you are doing all the right things but still, you are not getting the results. In today’s video I want to show you the one uncommon thing that I bet you didn’t even think of but get you great results on social media)

 

 

BIG IDEA


Every great story and presentation needs a big idea. Going back to the first point in the article. This is the ONE thing you want your audience to remember. Your audience won’t remember everything you tell them but if you can give them one easy to remember and a repeatable idea they are more likely to act on what you teach as well as remember you, the presenter.

 

Here are some great BIG idea examples:

  • If you’re building a business online, video is the most effective tool you have
  • Speaking on stage can exponentially grow your credibility and business
  • Live video is not as complicated as we make it to be

 

SUPPORTING POINTS


Once you introduce your big idea you also want to make sure you have some supporting points that help you prove your thesis.

 

These can be anywhere from 1 concept to 5 simple steps to 3 mistakes to avoid. The idea is that you are using proven concepts to show people why they should accept your idea and run with it.

 

The sweet spot for supporting points is anywhere from 1-3, maybe 5. However, I’d highly recommend not going beyond five.  We are trying to make it easy for our audience to remember what we share. The fewer concepts you can introduce the better. 

 

In order to ensure they remember your concepts make sure to share stories that are relevant to each point. Introducing stories with each concept just adds another layer of understanding and memorability. 

 

CREATE A SUMMARY


Once you are done sharing your supporting points it’s time to do a quick review of the big idea and concepts. This is where you tie everything together for those watching to ensure they understand the points you shared. Make this section quick, simple and succinct. Remember, you are summarizing your points, so no need to linger.

 

For example:

In this video, you learned {BIG IDEA} and the 3 steps to achieve {outcome}. The 3 simple steps are: 1, 2, and 3. 

 

CLEAR CALL TO ACTION


At the end of your video, you want to have a clear call to action. Make sure you are sending people to one place or asking them to take ONE action step. If you offer up too many things people get confused. And as Don Miller says, “When you confuse, you lose.” 

 

Give your audience a simple action step they can take right away. Almost immediately. This could be to do one small thing you just taught. It could be downloading a free pdf or training you offer on this or a similar topic. This could also be asking them to send you a DM or sign up for your email list.

 

The bottom line is, keep it simple, make it easy to understand.

 

BONUS: TIPS ON BODY LANGUAGE


Doing a live video or any type of video can feel awkward. I totally get it. Showing up on camera doesn’t always feel natural. Being your most authentic, genuine, magnetic self is hard, especially if you are not used to doing videos regularly or if like me you’re an introvert. Believe it or not, it took me months to start feeling remotely comfortable in front of the camera. 

 

5 simple tips on how to increase your camera confidence in a genuine way.

  1. Keep in mind you are talking to an individual on the other side of the screen. So, talk to one person. This will help you make your presentation or talk more personal.
  2. Look into the camera. This will make the person watching feel like you are looking into their eyes. It’s a great way to make a deeper connection via video.
  3. Make sure to soften your facial expressions. Smile often. Sometimes when I do a presentation I can get quite focused and intense. This comes across a bit scary on camera so I had to learn to soften my facial expressions. Smiling is an easy way to do that.
  4. Use your hands. Even if they are not visible on camera. When we gesture with our hand like we would while talking to a friend helps us loosen up a little and come across more relaxed.
  5. Ground your body. Again, whether you are standing up or sitting down, make sure you place your feet flat on the floor. Avoid swaying or rocking back and forth. This will make you look and feel more self assured and grounded.
