#connection communication

Did you know that throughout the span of one day we are bombarded with 35,000 messages? Our world is cluttered with words. I’ve read that on average, an individual speaks anywhere from 13,000 to 16,000 words a day.

Everywhere we go, anywhere we look, someone is trying to get our attention, while at the same time we are also trying to get our own messages across to others.

But how many of our words really matter? And more importantly, do those words help us connect with our listeners or do those words impede us from really connecting?

Talk is easy - but the real question is, are you really communicating? More importantly, are you connecting with your words?

In the rest of this article, I want to share 3 quick strategies to help you better connect with your words. This article is for you if:

  • You want to be able to communicate effectively in your business, no matter the platform
  • You want to actually connect with your audience with your words, not just talk at them

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in all of my years as a professional entertainer and communicator is this, people can’t really succeed in life without effective communication. It’s not enough to just say things. In order to be successful, your communication has to go deeper than just words.

Your words have to CONNECT.

I’m a believer that good communication is all about connecting.

So, what does it mean to connect? What does that look like?

It’s the ability to identify with others and relate to them in a way that increases your influence with them

The ability to really connect with others will be a big factor in you reaching YOUR potential and in also making the IMPACT you desire to make. No one can succeed in life alone. Big dreams are accomplished with great teams. You need people as much as they need you. The sooner you learn how to really connect with others, the better off you’ll be.

Let’s break this down to a very practical level.

3 ways you can connect with people in three different settings

  • How to connect one on one

This is the foundation of connecting. Why? Because 80 to 90 percent of all communication and connection occurs at the one-on-one level, and this is also where you connect with those closest to you. Here’s how you do that:

  • Talk more about the other person and less about yourself.
  • Listen more than you talk. And when I say listen I mean, really listen. Not be thinking about your answer or what you will have for dinner. Make your communication partner feel seen and heard.
  • Ask insightful questions and repeat their answer back to them
  • Ask how you can help them get closer to their goals or whatever they are trying to achieve

How to connect in a group

  • Look for ways to genuinely compliment people for their ideas and input. Notice the word genuine. Fake flattery will do you no good. In fact, you'll achieve the opposite of connection.
  • Celebrate people’s success with them. Find ways to help them celebrate their achievements.
  • Look for ways to add value to them or bring recognition for what they are doing.

How to connect with a bigger audience

One of the greatest and fastest ways to learn how to connect with an audience is to study communicators who are good at it.

Learn from them and then develop your own unique style of connection. Here are a couple of suggestions.

  • Let your audience and listeners know how excited you are to be with them. Show them how much you appreciate their attendance, whether online or offline.
  • Always deliver great value in your presentations. Go above and beyond.
  • Make your presentations a two-way-street. Don’t just talk at them, instead make sure you initiate engagement from them. A good way to do this is to ask questions that can be answered in a word or two or with just a simple hand raise.

When you start consistently implementing these suggestions, you’ll be well on your way to becoming an extremely effective communicator who knows the art of connection.

Here’s your DREAM to DONE action step:

Pick one of the categories from above and connect with someone or a group TODAY.
